Dealing With an Incapacitated Loved One or a Loved One With Dementia During the Holiday Season in the Orlando, Florida Area

The holidays can be difficult and stressful enough with all the parties to attend; Christmas events to attend; charity buying; and shopping for friends and relatives. If you are a caregiver, or friend or relative of a loved one with dementia that you care for daily or visit weekly, the extra obligations of the holiday season may make you feel overburdened and overwhelmed.

Your goal is to accomplish everything you have on your check list to do in the day. However, there are only twenty-four (24) hours in a day and you need to sleep. Since there is only so much time in a day, the stress of trying to complete all your tasks can be overwhelming. That is because you are a caregiver, maybe a worker with a job, and maybe a mother or father. In order to accomplish all the tasks for the good of others, you neglect yourself. You give up your exercise routine or your sleep.

Remember, you must take care of yourself. If you do not take care of yourself and get sick, you cannot care for anyone else. Here is a quote from Mary Weatherly regarding the holidays that may help you better cope if you are stressed out this holiday season:

You are going to encounter many people this week who are at their breaking point. Friends, family, coworkers, teachers, strangers in the grocery store, and retail workers. While it may be the merriest time of the year for some, it may be the saddest, most stressful, longest, most heart-breaking time for others. We are all busy. But we are not too busy to be kind, caring, and patient. Remember, the best thing you can give someone this season is love.

If you are a caregiver, clearly you are giving love. Remember that the next time you are so overwhelmed that you are on the brink of tears. You are giving love which is the best Christmas present you can give someone this Christmas season. You are the guardian angel for the person you care for daily. The next time you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and think of the good you are doing as a caregiver. Pat yourself on the back and thank yourself for spreading Christmas Joy and Christmas Love this holiday season as a caregiver. You are the kind person that Hallmark movie characters are based upon.
