INTERESTING FACTS ON ALZHEIMER’S IN THE ORLANDO, FLORIDA AREA

FOR THE CAREGIVER: Here are some interesting facts regarding Alzheimer’s in the Orlando, Florida Area. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease is highly stressful and can lead to depression, anxiety, and other potential life-threatening illnesses. If you have a positive attitude as a caregiver, that may benefit your physical and emotional health.

There are ways you can work on being positive which can lead to happiness:

1. Recognize a positive event each day.

2. Savor that positive event and log it in a journal or tell someone about it.

3. Start a daily gratitude journal.

4. List a personal strength each day and note how you used this strength recently.

5. Set an attainable goal each day and note your progress.

6. Report a relatively minor stressor each day, then list ways in which the event can be positively reappraised or reframed.

7. Understand that small acts of kindness can have a big impact on positive emotions; and practice a small act of kindness each day.

8. Practice mindfulness by paying attention to daily experiences and with a daily 10- minute breathing exercise, concentrate on the breath.

Hopefully, this happiness regime will reduce your depression and anxiety. 

FOR ALL:  Living a healthy lifestyle may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, even if you carry genes that put you at risk for developing the disease. Those who engaged in the following lifestyle were least likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in old age:

1. Regular physical activity: either 150 minutes a week which is 2.5 hours per week of moderate activity like walking or 75 minutes which is 1 hour and 15 minutes of more vigorous activity like jogging, cycling; or engaging in physical activity at least five days per week or vigorous activity at least one day per week.

2. Healthy Diet: defined as eating at least four of the following seven food groups regularly: three or more servings of fruit a day, three or more servings of vegetables a day; two or more servings of fish a week; one or fewer servings of processed meats like deli meats or hotdogs per week; fewer than one and a half servings of red meat per week; eating three or more servings of whole grains a day; and eating fewer than one and a half servings of refined grains like cereal or white bread per day.

3. Limiting Alcohol:  one or fewer drinks a day for women, and two or fewer drinks a day for men.

4. Not smoking.
