Grief and Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the Orlando, Florida Area

When most people think of grief, they think of a death, break up or a divorce. Most people view it is a short-term event. Grief happens when you suffer a loss. It is a normal process that can last a long time. During this time period you may experience ups and downs. Grief is a universal experience. However, the way you experience it is truly your own.

When a loved one has Dementia or Alzheimer’s, you have loss everywhere. You experience the loss of the person you once knew, little by little over time. They become more like a stranger to you. You become more of a stranger to them. Further, you may suffer losses from being a caregiver that includes spending time with friends and doing your favorite activities. Being a caregiver can be all-consuming. You are so focused on the loved one you are caring for that you lose yourself.

How do you deal with all this stress and loss; and make sure that you are not so absorbed in caregiving that you neglect yourself? Make sure you attend all necessary doctors’ appointments. Make sure you eat healthy. Try to do at least one thing for yourself in a day or week. There are respite caregivers that can assist you and relieve do stress. There are home care nurses too. Ask other relatives to help you. Seek counseling, if necessary. There are also support groups. Your religious affiliation may have support groups at your place of worship. Research on the Internet the different resources that are out there such respite care, adult daycare, home health aide, care managers and patient advocates, along with support groups.

Then, you suffer the biggest loss of all when your loved one dies. How do you cope with that?  Sometimes it is good to hear from others who are going through the same experiences you are. They are dealing with the same loss you are dealing with every day. That is where support groups and counseling may be beneficial.
