You have been working at home since approximately March 17, 2020. You have been in isolation with your family. You may get out of the house to go to the grocery store, pharmacy, or take a walk while you self distance and stay 6 feet away from other people. These are stressful times. As much as you love your family, being cooped up with them in your house can grate on your nerves, cause anxiety, and cause you to go stir crazy.
What can you do during these trying times to help reduce or alleviate the stressful family dynamic?
There was an article in the Orlando Sentinel State & Local Section on Monday, April 20, 2020 that dealt with this issue. The title of the article was Experts: Communication key to keeping relationships healthy during quarantine. In the article, it quoted a survey from tech website GearHungry.com that found that on working from home, that nearly two out of three couples in Florida said that being home all the time has already put a strain on their relationship. The article said that was higher than the national average of forty-five percent (45%) who are claiming to feel the stress.
They quoted a local therapist that said in times of stress, any weakness in a relationship becomes more pronounced. According to the article, Americans were not alone in feeling the coronavirus pinch on their relationships. Numerous sources reported that China experienced a sharp uptick in divorce filings in March after quarantine restrictions were eased.
A local licensed mental health therapist said couples should try to keep fun alive in their relationship during stay-at-home orders. The experts said it is hard to give a one size fits all solution. Two experts recommended communication. One expert said to have family meetings and check-ins. They also recommended giving each other space. They said you should discuss who will do what chores in the house. The expert recommended showering and getting dressed. The expert said you still can be comfy.
