There was an excellent article in the December 2020 AARP Bulletin called “11 Ways to Stop Fraud Now” This is not only useful to seniors, but it is also useful to the general population. In the article, it is said that the best defense against fraud is you.

The 11 recommended ways to protect yourself from fraud are:

  1. Improve your password protection. Utilize dual-factor authentication to protect passwords.
  2. Protect your mail. Try using informed delivery with a website like  InformedDelivery.usps.com
  3. Check your credit report. Due to the pandemic, you can get a free credit report through April 2021.
  4. Filter your phone calls. To help curtail the flood of spam calls, enter your trusted contacts into your smartphone.
  5. Manage your emails. Start marking any suspicious or unwanted emails that show up in your inbox as spam.
  6. Do a quick Facebook privacy checkup. Go into your Privacy settings to make sure you are only sharing what you want to share.
  7. Vet unfamiliar e-retailers. Before purchasing something from a retailer you have not used before, do a search with words like “scam,” “fraud,” and “complaints.”
  8. Say no to gift cards. Take the pledge— “I will never, ever, ever buy a gift card for someone I do not know.”
  9. Copy all the contents of  your wallet today. Take pictures of or scan IDs, bank cards and credit cards in case they are lost or stolen. This will make it easier to recover them.
  10. Don’t send nudes. This seems like a no brainer. However, there has been a large increase in extortion.

This is common sense information that would also aid you if you are ever involved in a court case such as a Dissolution of Marriage Case, Custody Case, or Guardianship case. It is good information if you are a business or an attorney and have an obligation to protect your client’s privacy and information.
