There was an interesting article in the Preserving Your Memory/Summer 2022 Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation titled “Support for the Sandwich Generation” by Cindy Kuzma. In the article, Kuzma describes how multigenerational caregivers face many obstacles. The author explains how tools such as communication, delegation and stress relief can see you through these challenges.
The Sandwich Generation
This may sound like you. Or it may sound like your relative, neighbor or friend. We all know someone facing this daunting situation. The author describes that on one side are aging elders, many with health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. On the other side are young children who still need daily support and guidance. In the middle is the sandwich generation of those squeezed between caring for their offspring and their parents or older relatives, often while balancing full-time jobs.
Multigenerational Caregivers
The author states that the population of these multigenerational caregivers is large and growing. According to Kuzma, recent estimates suggest that more than one in ten parents with children at home were also caring for an older adult. The author states while this can be rewarding, it also puts your health at risk because balancing the needs of children and parents often means your own wellbeing falls by the wayside. Kuzma recommends speaking up, seeking support and stepping aside to help ease strain and pressure.
Resources to Alleviate the Stress
Kuzma has suggestions to help you out in your situation. She suggests the following: talk openly and honestly, ask for help, make connections, prioritize your health, set aside private times, and take breaks. She suggests trying to use The Fisher Center’s Resource Center Locator. This site can help connect you with elder care resources in your area. She states that the Eldercare Locator or phone number 800-677-1116 can also be useful.
