Did You Know That There are Moving Specialists Who Help Seniors?

On Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Orlando Sentinel had an article titled, “Moving specialists help seniors with big tasks,” written by Paul Span of The New York Times. This is not the first time I have heard of this. Practicing Elder Law, I have met people who do this locally.

Reasons to Use a Moving Specialist

Why would someone use a specialist? You, yourself, may be elderly and moving from a larger house to an independent living facility and may be downsizing. Children may want to help their elderly parents downsize. However, the children may not have the time in their busy schedules to dedicate the time they would like to this task.

In the article it states that neither the children of the elderly couple nor the elderly couple had ever heard of senior move managers until the retirement facility recommended a few of them. Most professional guardians or elder care managers can probably direct you to senior move managers, or they may be able to help you with that task, too.

What Senior Moving Specialists Do

What exactly do senior move managers do for you? In the article, it was explained that the senior move manager planned the elderly couple’s move, they packed the belongings from the old residence and set them up at the new residence, including the moving van and movers.

According to the article, 1,100 such companies belong to the National Association of Senior & Speciality Move Managers, which offers training training and certification and requires members to carry liability insurance and adhere to a code of ethics.

Services Offered by Moving Specialists

The article further states, that depending on the client’s needs, the move manager services include sorting and organizing belongings, working with a moving company, and using floor plans to determine what can fit where in the new residence.

This can include preparing the new home, from spices in the closet to towels on the rack; and they can sell, donate or dispose of what is left behind. According to the article, most move managers charge $65 to $125 an hour, with big regional variations.
