According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel Sunday January 29, 2017, paper entitled “Pets no longer just property in Alaskan divorce cases BY KARRIN BRULLIARD The Washington Post, pets are now akin to children in an Alaskan divorce. Alaska is the first state to treat your beloved pet as more than property subject to equitable distribution. Alaska will now take into consideration the well being of the animal. The Alaska bill also allows courts to include pets in domestic violence protective orders and requires the owners of pets seized in cruelty or neglect cases to cover the cost of their shelter. Florida still considers your pet as property in an Orlando divorce.
