How can you minimize your attorney’s fees in a divorce case? There are several things you can do to minimize your attorney’s fees. Some are as follows:
- Do not call or email your attorney and tell the attorney the same thing repeatedly regarding complaints you have about the other party. You should email or call your attorney when there is a legitimate concern. Remember, if you email your attorney ten times in one day, you will be billed for the attorney reviewing your emails and responding to them. It is much cheaper to vent to a therapist, than your attorney who is charging you $300 to $400 an hour.
- Remember, if you call your attorney for hand holding, you will not get attorney’s fees for that if you request attorney’s fees from the other party. There is case law that states that.
- You should do as your attorney advises in a timely manner. If your attorney must follow up with you as to why you are not producing documents on time, you are billed for that. You are also billed for your attorney having to respond to a motion to compel; and possibly attend a hearing. You pay for that. If you do not follow your attorney’s advice and do what you are told in a timely manner, you hold up your case. Then the case is not resolved as quickly as it could have been resolved.
- If you question what your attorney is telling you, you can get a second opinion from another attorney. Your attorney gives you advice based on the law. You must follow the law.
- Stay focused on the issues that your attorney has advised you the trial judge will want to hear in your case. If you send your attorney emails on information that the trial judge will not consider at your trial, you are wasting time and money. Your attorney has the Florida Statutes and will explain to you what you must prove in your case. You should concentrate on that and not go off on tangents unrelated to what is necessary to your case. You must stay focused on what is important. Your attorney knows what is important to your case. Therefore, listen to your attorney. You are paying your attorney for that advice.
