What You Should Know About Alzheimer’s in the Orlando, Florida Area?

Alzheimer’s disease has long been thought of as a disease caused purely by genetics, with no emphasis on the effect of lifestyle or hope for prevention. Thankfully, these perceptions are changing and the myth that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is caused solely by genetics is being busted. While genetics play a role in Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, so do lifestyle choices. Emerging evidence from scientists and researchers demonstrates that people’s daily choices have a significant impact on the brain and can measurably lower the risk of developing long Alzheimer’s disease, or where it has developed, mitigating the severity of symptoms.

Research has shown Alzheimer’s disease and possibly other forms of dementia begin to cause changes in the brain decades before symptoms become apparent. During these decades, the brain becomes increasingly affected by the food we eat, amount we exercise, quality of sleep, our ability to manage stress, and the ways we challenge our cognitive abilities. When a person eats an unhealthy diet, exercises infrequently, consistently does not get enough sleep, fails to find ways to manage stress, and does not challenge their cognitive abilities the effect is negative, and the brain becomes vulnerable. Over time, the brain is unable to compensate for less than healthy factors and starts to show damage.

How do these lifestyle choices have a major impact on developing Alzheimer’s disease? Because of research based science, National Geographic Fellow and New York Times bestselling author Dan Buettner discovered five places in world where people live longest and have the healthiest lives. These places are called Blue Zones. The Blue Zones include Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Loma Linda, California. His groundbreaking research led other researchers to investigate the underlying science of Buettner’s nine tenets of healthy living identified in the five Blue Zones of the world. These tenets are: lifestyle involving natural movement throughout the day; a deep sense of purpose or meaning; skillful stress management; avoiding overeating and eating late at night; eating a primarily plant-based diet; enjoying a drink or two with friends; connection to a faith community; living near family and finding a lifelong partner; and access to social networks that support healthy living.

The reasoning behind the preventative power of these lifestyle choices is they are scientifically demonstrated to prevent the four interconnected biological processes responsible for most of the degeneration contributing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. These four biological processes are inflammation, oxidation, glucose dysregulation, and lipid dysregulation.
