The Sandwich Generation, the Caregivers in the Orlando, Florida Area

There was an interesting article in NAELA NEWS National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys JAN/FEB/MARCH 2023, “A View from the Middle of the Sandwich, Caregiver Support” by Chari M. Alison, CELA. The author states that she is an elder law attorney and a member of the sandwich generation.

Being a Caregiver in the Sandwich Generation

Alison discusses her own family situation. She states that her family story of being a caregiver in the sandwich generation is not unique. She states that the need to support family caregivers has become an urgent public health issue for some time. She states in the article that more than 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. She states that in 2022 the economic impact was a staggering estimated cost of $321 billion; and it is projected to go up to 1 trillion in 2050.

Support for Family Caregivers

Did you know that there is a National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) that was established by the Department of Health and Human Services through its Administration for Community Living (ACL) in 2000? NFCPS provides grants to states and territories based on their share of the population aged 70 and over to fund family caregiver support services designed to keep older adults in the community as long as possible.

The 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers was developed in response to the urgent need for a comprehensive caregiver support system and envisions a world in which family caregivers have the support needed to provide care without jeopardizing their own financial, emotional, and physical stability.

According to the article, families and other informal caregivers are the nation’s primary providers of long-term care and that it imposes tremendous emotional and financial burdens on them.  The author states that NFCSP works in conjunction with other Older American Act service-providers to provide support in the areas of information/referral; access assistance; individual counseling; organization of support groups and caregiver training; respite care; and supplemental services on a limited basis.
