5 Things to Know When You First Receive Child Support

  1. It will probably take approximately 6 weeks for the clerk or Tallahassee to process the first Orlando child support payment. That is regardless of whether the other parent pays through the clerk of the court, through the disbursement unit in Tallahassee, or by IWO (Income Withholding Order). Therefore, you need to make sure that the other parent pays you directly during that time period. If he/she does not pay you directly during that time period, then you may have no child support for 6 weeks or longer until the first child support payment is processed. If you are the payor parent, make sure the other parent signs a receipt for the payment. A notarized statement that you have made the payment is required. Make sure the statement includes the case number, the date of payment, and the amount of payment. You need to file that receipt of payment notarized statement with the clerk of court. Make sure you keep an extra copy for your records.
  2. If you do not do the steps in number 1, then the clerk will show you as delinquent, or in arrears for not paying child support for that period. The clerk will send you a notice of such delinquency. Even if you provide the clerk with a cancelled check as proof of the payment, they will not accept that as proof that you have paid. They will require a notarized statement from the parent receiving the child support.
  3. If your spouse will not sign an affidavit you are current in your child support payment, then you may request a hearing for the court to determine that you are current on your child support payments and not delinquent.
  4. If your spouse is paying child support through the disbursement unit in Tallahassee, you may go on their website and follow the instructions to register all your information and set up an account. You may be able to receive the child support payment from the Disbursement unit by direct deposited into your account. Or, you may be able set up to receive a debit card with the child support amount. You can read all the details on their website.
  5. Remember, the clerk and Tallahassee charge an administrative fee of 4 percent of the Orlando child support amount or $5.25 to process the child support. The paying parent must pay this on top of the child support amount. If they do not do that, the clerk will show an arrearage for each payment. Plus, the payee parent will not receive the full amount.
