Downsizing in the Orlando, Florida Area

There was an interesting article in the October 10, 2020, Orlando Sentinel titled “When Downsizing, Don’t Overlook the Pawnshop” by Marni Jameson. Her impressions may be useful if you have just gone through a divorce and want to get rid of the personal property you received in the divorce. They may also be useful if you are writing a will and do not think your children are interested in your personal property. After deciding that you have no use for your jewelry and/or personal property or that it stirs up bad memories, you may want to take it to a pawn broker in lieu of donating it to a charity, selling it at garage sale, or throwing it in the trash. First, make sure it is not valuable and can be sold to a jeweler.

The author says that by getting your personal property organized now, your children will not have to deal with at the time of your death. She discusses the line: it is not morbid; it is thoughtful. It is dying in order. Also, it is an alternative to shutting a cluttered drawer full of jewelry and personal property for someone else to sort through in the future instead of handling it now. She said an alternative solution is a reputable pawn shop.

The author states that she asked her children if they would be interested in any of her jewelry after her death, and they said “no.” That is something you could do, if you are in the estate planning stages of your life. If you are not bequeathing heirlooms, you may be bequeathing headaches.

The author states that when cleaning out your home or downsizing, consider adding a reputable pawnshop to your list of liquidation vehicles along with Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, the consignment store, yard sales, and the auction house. The author says that selling as is can beat melt down values for jewelry. The author says that pawnshops will buy jewelry, old coins, collectibles, guns, musical instruments, electronics, and antiques.

The author states that when selling a pricy piece of jewelry, go to a jeweler, a gold buyer, and a pawn shop to compare offers. The author states do not be afraid to bargain. The author tells you to play it safe. She says if you feel uncomfortable going to a pawnshop or leaving with a wad of cash, go during daylight hours and bring a friend.
